Cancer

Some experts currently believe that excessive weight is associated with increased rates of cancer, particularly colon, rectal and prostate cancer in men and cervical, ovarian, breast and gall bladder cancer in women. Some studies suggest that obese men have a 35%, and obese women have a 55% greater risk of developing cancer.

Suggestions to lower the risk of cancer include:

  • Maintain desirable body weight
  • Eat a variety of foods
  • Include a variety of fruits and vegetables daily
  • Eat more high-fibre foods
  • Cut down on total fat intake
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Limit consumption of salt-cured, smoked and nitrite-preserved foods
