Diabetes Mellitus
Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a condition that is characterized by insufficient levels of insulin, the hormone that enables the body to store and utilize sugars. Obesity is the most significant risk factor for the development of this disease; NIDDM (adult-onset diabetes) is 5 times more common among obese people.
In this form of diabetes (NIDDM), insulin is produced, but not in large enough amounts to meet the body's needs. Excess weight in obese people increases the need for insulin, thus worsening the condition. Although some people who suffer from this condition may produce normal amounts of insulin, they have an insufficiency of insulin because their bodies are resistant to the effects of the hormone. Weight loss, oral medications and special diets are usually sufficient to control this type of diabetes.
Diabetes is a common condition and can predispose one to other health problems. Diabetics have an increased risk of coronary artery disease. Also ulcers, on the feet can develop due to blood vessel damage from diabetes. Other complications related to diabetes include kidney, eye, and nerve damage. These problems usually reduce the life expectancy of people with NIDDM. Obesity can complicate this disease, but with weight loss the effects can possibly be reduced.
